To the pioneer artists who explored the plains and the mountains of the trans-Mississippi West and drew and painted what they saw in that vast region we are indebted for a vivid and colorful record of what the Old West was like. Yet so rapidly was the West transformed from unknown Indian country into a settled region that artists had little time to prepare their pictorial record. Within ninety years of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 the West of the Indian buffalo hunters, of the Rocky Mountain trappers and fort-based Indian traders, the overland trails, the California Gold Rush, the Plains Indian Wars, and the open range cowboys had passed into history.
