Attentive, Intelligent, Rational, and Responsible: Transforming Economics to Save the Planet

In a major development of the wide-ranging philosophy of Bernard Lonergan, authors John Raymaker and Pierre Whalon argue for a new economics responsive to the social and environmental crises of the twenty-first century. Extending Lonergan's major innovations in philosophy and linking them to his lifelong work in macroeconomics, Raymaker and Whalon elucidate Lonergan's implicit aim of applying ethics to economic processes. At the heart of their argument lies the necessity of societal economic and environmental "conversion," or "movement from one world of meaning to another," to complement the series of individual conversions Lonergan identified as integral to the processes of cognition in his best-known work, Insight: A Study of Human Understanding.Taking a holistic view of Lonergan's lifework, within which his great philosophical studies Insight and Method in Theology are "sandwiched" between his two volumes on economics, Raymaker and Whalon examine the ways Lonergan's thought exposes the inherent flaws of the dominant economic theories and practices that have guided policies around the globe to the detriment of human flourishing and the destruction of the environment. At the same time, they show how Lonergan's generalized empirical method, in combination with his work on economics, points to an economically sound, socially transformative, and environmentally healing way forward.
