Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle

Beginning in 1951, Alfred Newman Beadle V (1927-1998) designed and built a wide range of projects, mostly in and around Phoenix, Arizona, transforming the desert with a Miesian style architecture that was carefully integrated into the desert landscape. In addition to dozens of residences, he was responsible for numerous banks, hotels, restaurants, and apartment buildings, from a modest three-unit complex featured in the renowned Case Study House program (the only project outside of California to be included), to a 22-story tower, the largest residential building in Phoenix at the time. Beadle's buildings were published nationally and internationally, and he was honored with countless awards, including three "Design in Steel" awards from the American Iron and Steel Institute. In 1965, Architectural Record named Beadle House 11 one of their Record Houses. Although a number of Beadle's commercial buildings have been lost, his residential projects, which have come to be known affectionately as "Beadle boxes," are now highly prized by design-savvy homeowners. In 1993, Arizona State University mounted the one and only exhibition of Beadle's work, Constructions: Buildings in Arizona by Alfred Newman Beadle. The accompanying catalog has been out of print for 15 years. Due to persistent demand, Gnosis, Ltd. has published a second edition, generously illustrated with 31 black-and-white photos and 25 drawings, that includes a new foreword by ASU Professor Emeritus and architectural historian Bernard Michael Boyle.
