From Mind to Heart: Christian Meditation Today

How can one bridge the chasm between rigorous exegetical study and private devotional exercises? One key is the practice of a vital but neglected discipline of the Christian life: meditation. "Meditation," writes the author, "is a particular way of receiving the revealed and dynamic Word of God into the heart from the mind so as to direct the will in the way of God's guidance. It is related to, but not identical with, either intellectual study or prayer." In part I the author examines the biblical teaching on meditation, drawing heavily on the Psalms, the Gospels, and Paul's epistles, and he concludes that meditation is vital to Christian spirituality. In part 2 he lays out the methods practiced by Reformers, Catholics, and Puritans, and then presents models of meditation designed to encourage the reader "to adopt one or another of these methods and thus to begin" the practice of meditation.
