Rowling: When Neville Longbottom, the boy who kept losing his toad, was called, he fell over on his way to the stool. Student: After Amelda Jameson, the senior who kept winning all the awards, was announced, she stood up from her seat for the recognition. PARTICIPLE PHRASE J. K. Rowling: The train rattled onward, speeding them out into open country. Student: The rain poured fast, soaking them through to their skin. PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE J. K. Rowling: Inside the room, the cold voice was continuing to hiss. Student: Through the window, the silvery moon was starting to shine. ADJECTIVE CLAUSE J. K. Rowling: They were watching a brand-new television, a welcome-home-for-the-summer present for Dudley, who had been complaining loudly about the long walk between the fridge and the television in the living room.- Student: They were eating a home-cooked meal, a congratulations-on-all-the-good-grades reward for Santiago, who had been working diligently after his last report card to improve his grades and become honor-role material in his classes. ADVERB CLAUSE J. K. Rowling: Since he had last seen it, the gargoyle guarding the entrance to the headmaster’s study had been knocked aside. Student: Because she had just noticed this, the bridge crossing the stream to the public pool had been repaired quickly.
