The German Democratic Republic - East Germany - has been subject to more stereotypes than any other place in Europe. “Puppet of Moscow” and “builder of the Berlin Wall” are only the most notorious. In this book, Jonathan Steele discards the Cold War clichés and traces the country’s ancestry back to the tortured history of the German Left before and during the Hitler period. He shows that the country’s origins, its relationship with Moscow and its present-day reality are more complex than most outsiders expect. Eastern Europe in general and the GDR in particular have specific socialist features which distinguish the area from countries with a social-democratic system. At the same time, Steele analyzes the German-ness of the GDR. Comparison and contrast with West Germany run through the book as a constant theme. It is based on Western and Eastern source material and is divided into a historical section, dealing with the making of the GDR, and a series of chapters discussing its present structure and way of life. The book is the first systematic attempt to relate the country not just to Moscow or West Germany but to the broad tradition of Western socialism.
