Jamie Ray Griffin is a young black man struggling to create a decent life for himself in the harsh, often violent world of rural Louisiana during the 1970s. We follow Jamie Ray from his first trying day at newly integrated Pinesboro High School, enduring the taunts of white classmates with his best friend, Booger, to the community's seeming acceptance of him as a star football player for the school. But Jamie Ray soon learns - with horrifying consequences - that most of the town's white population has a limited tolerance for the ambitions of a black man outside the role they prescribe for him. Jamie Ray takes this knowledge with him to the University of Louisiana, New Orleans, where he is recruited as a tailback. There, he is confronted by the necessity to assert himself as a person and as a black man against the desires of academic advisers, friends, coaches, and others.
